The clear theme: the center of gravity moved from "agent that answers" to "agent that stays running" — always-on, own cloud computer, own browser, plugged into your existing apps. And the loudest open-source replies (OpenDots, OpenMuse, OpenMausBot) are all self-hostable answers to OpenAI's closed launch.

Everyone's reading the dots launch as a model story. It isn't.
The shift is from agents that answer to agents that never switch off — own cloud computer, own browser, plugged into the apps you already pay for.
Which is why the most interesting replies weren't takes. They were repos. OpenDots, OpenMuse, OpenMausBot — all shipped within two weeks, all self-hostable, all betting the runtime matters more than the model.
The best line I saw on it, from a breakdown of Altman's own guidance: give it responsibilities, not tasks.
That's the whole gap. Tasks are what you delegate to software. Responsibilities are what you delegate to people.

What can I do with Mecum?

Use agents for exports, updates, checks and other tasks in desktop apps, even without an API. Build a team around your workflows. Mecum reads the interface, acts in the app and checks the result.

Which Macs and apps does it support?

Mecum targets macOS 15 or later on Apple silicon, including custom and legacy apps. Support depends on the application, its controls and the task. Get started lists the configuration validated so far.

Can I keep using my Mac while agents work?

Yes. Agents work in the background while you use your apps. Mecum directs input to the agent’s window and checks it before acting. You can stop a run from the Mecum app.

Can I connect my own agent?

Yes. Connect Claude Code or Codex over MCP with the command Mecum generates. The Docs cover other local MCP clients. Gemini and Ollama also work as model connections in Mecum. Model access and costs depend on your provider.

What stays on my Mac?

Window images are processed on your Mac, where Mecum also stores app knowledge and conversations. If you use a remote model, it can receive window text, task context and relevant app knowledge.

What is open source?

Mecum is open source under Apache 2.0, including the app, the engine and the background driver. You can inspect, fork and build on it.
